Designed for the 2015 Guernsey Literary Festival, ‘Channel’ exhibition was a collaboration of three creative processes, painting by Frances Lemmon, poetry by Candy Neubert and exhibition design by CCD. Design Director Oliver Westgarth was approached to curate and design an exhibition of Frances’ paintings which are a response to Candy’s poems. It was critical that our design echoed their collaboration and was a considered response. It was also important that the structure would be reusable, affordable and easily (dis)assembled.
The design acts as a room-within-a-room, a channel-like private place for viewers to focus on the painting & poem pairings. The exhibition becomes immersive providing an intimately proportioned space to view the artworks. The work was hung on painted boards supported from below waist height, retaining a link to the external space. Translucent Perspex was used overhead to allow plenty of light in, turning the channel into a giant diffused light-box. At the centre, floating cantilevered wings created a larger ‘courtyard’ space allowing multiple internal perspectives, the artwork is carefully curated within this.
