Fig Tree Cottage

Fig Tree Cottage, one of a small group of fishermen’s cottages overlooking Rocquaine Bay, has been sensitively transformed to provide modern living while retaining its historic charm.

The project replaced and extended earlier additions, introducing a new north gable and a series of asymmetrical rear extensions that expand the footprint without overwhelming the original structure. From the roadside, the alterations are subtle, with a reclaimed timber-clad side extension discreetly tucked among mature trees.

Larch cladding, sage green joinery, and a plinth of beach pebbles reference local vernacular details, protecting the building from storm surges. Inside, the home now includes a larger kitchen, recreation room, and additional bedroom, finished with materials such as reclaimed scaffold board stairs and polished plywood floors.

The result is a characterful coastal home that balances creativity, sustainability, and respect for its setting.
