La Croisee

La Croisée is a charming property in Torteval comprising a 17th-century farmhouse and two detached historic barns. When our client purchased the site in 2007, the farmhouse was still occupied, but the wider property had fallen into disrepair and the farm was no longer in use.

Our brief was to revitalise the site while preserving its rural character. The existing buildings were carefully stripped back, repaired, and upgraded, with the design centred on enhancing and connecting the historic structures.

The main farmhouse was extended to the south and west, creating a new kitchen and drawing room, while the southern barn was linked to the house and re-thatched. The eastern barn, remaining detached, was converted into a self-contained studio.

Externally, the render was removed to expose the original granitework, which was repointed with lime mortar, and the surrounding landscape was redesigned to unify the buildings and their setting. Internally, the scheme balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design — historic fireplaces and beams were restored, while modern elements such as a minimalist staircase and a glazed link bring light and clarity to the interiors.
