Belmont House

Belmont House is a fine example of a 1750s house situated within St. Peter Port, which makes an important contribution to Guernsey's stock of Georgian architecture. Although the building’s proportions and presence remained, much of its character had been lost through unsympathetic subdivision in the 1970s.

Our client’s ambition was to restore the integrity of the original house while redeveloping it to create four high-quality apartments. The brief called for the removal of all later alterations, retaining the surviving historic shell and reinstating period features wherever they could be uncovered or authentically replicated. At the same time, the building was to be returned to its former elegance externally and upgraded internally to meet modern expectations of comfort and finish.

The project’s success lies in the careful refurbishment and meticulous reinstatement of original architectural details. The grand staircase, sash windows and internal shutters were all repaired and preserved. Replacement covings were installed to match the original profiles, and a new central screen and archway were constructed based to replicate the original.

Externally, the façade was lime-rendered, the original portico and cornices were sympathetically repaired, and a new slate roof was installed in keeping with the period character. The result is a building that once again makes a proud contribution to the townscape while providing four prestigious apartments with superior quality finishes.
