Charlotte Battery Gates and Landscaping
During major works to the property, it became necessary to undertake repair works to the dilapidated 200-year-old gates securing this 20th Century house. Initially advised that replacement was the only option, the owners instead opted for a sensitive programme of repair.

Although the gates and surrounding high granite walls are not Listed, they are an important part of Guernsey’s military heritage. The project combined modern conservation philosophy with traditional craftsmanship to retain as much historic fabric as possible. Specialist joiners Marcel & Ken Laine, previously engaged on the Town Church spire, undertook the challenging repairs.
The gates’ four main iron ‘C’-profile hinges were severely corroded, with some rivets almost destroyed. After careful removal and rebuilding using specialist 'chemical' metal, the hinges were successfully retained. Flat bracing was replaced, and automation installed to allow practical, everyday use.
Within the walls, CCD created a living and entertaining space, including an entrance courtyard and sunken garden that complement the new extension. The upper courtyard features sympathetic stone paving, repaired entrance gates, spacious parking, and subtle lighting that washes the granite walls at night.
The sunken garden design was guided by Landscape Architect Stephen Welch, and includes a lawn with level access to large bi-fold doors, a bespoke outdoor kitchen, and curved built-in seating formed from smooth granite. Lush planting, a trickling fountain, retractable canopy, and mellow lighting complete the space.
New stone and brickwork were carefully sourced to match the existing. Designed in collaboration with Welch Landscape Design, constructed by Granite Le Pelley, and overseen by Oliver Day, the project demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and exceptional finishing touches.
