La Chaumiere

Our brief was to design a sensitive extension to a Listed Guernsey cottage set along a quiet rural lane. The aim was to enhance the home for modern family living without compromising the character and charm of the original building.

We designed a scheme to extend the two-storey cottage, to include an additional bedroom and a new vaulted kitchen and living space. Rather than overpower the existing house, the extension is tucked discreetly to the rear, opening onto wide views across the generous garden plot. The vaulted ceiling adds height and light to the new family space, creating a contemporary space that still feels connected to the traditional fabric of the cottage.

In addition to the internal accommodation, the scheme includes a new granite-faced double garage. Its materials and proportions echo the character of the original building, ensuring the additions feel rooted in their setting rather than imposed upon it.

Working with a protected structure demanded a careful and considered approach, both in design and in negotiation with the planning authority. The success of that approach is reflected in the outcome: planning permission was granted just seven weeks after submission.
