A typical 1960s bungalow was transformed into a sustainable, elegant family home through sensitive refurbishment and a vertical extension, balancing contemporary living with respect for the original structure.

Our clients approached us with a typical 1960s bungalow, seeking a sensitive refurbishment and a vertical extension. While the existing building was significantly remodelled, its original structure remains largely intact, ensuring the original form is still legible. This approach not only respects the building’s character but also reduces embodied carbon, offering a sustainable and cost-efficient solution.
A substantial two-storey extension was added to the garden elevation, creating a generous open-plan living space, while three large bedrooms with en-suites were introduced on the first floor. An adjoining garage, complete with a cupola, complements the main house.
Externally, a new brick chimney stack anchors the design, and the building is fully clad in attractive New England-style composite materials. The result is a transformed home that balances contemporary elegance with the familiar charm of the original bungalow, creating a joyful and much-loved family residence.
