St. George

Set within 35 acres of landscaped grounds, this project transformed a small hamlet of historic buildings on one of Guernsey’s largest private estates.

The main house, a Regency residence built in 1822, sits before two courtyards framed by a collection of ancillary buildings. The oldest, the Chaplain’s Cottage, dates back to around 1500 and is the original dwelling on the site.

Over four years, we restored and extended the existing buildings, introduced new structures, and undertook conservation work across the estate. Landscaping and the reordering of driveways were designed in collaboration with Chartered Landscape Architect Stephen Welch.

The brief was to return the estate to its former status as one of the Bailiwick’s foremost residences — preserving historic character while integrating new construction in a sensitive and intelligent way.

Although each building has its own distinct architectural identity, a sense of harmony has been achieved through the use of traditional materials, skilled craftsmanship and well-judged design. Modern technologies, including heat pumps and integrated electronics, have been discreetly incorporated to ensure long-term energy efficiency without compromise to character.
