St. Stephen’s Community Centre
This contemporary extension replaces an early 20th-century church hall that had become outdated and unfit for purpose. Commissioned to deliver modern facilities — including toilets, kitchen and a meeting room — the project was completed within a modest budget while supporting the needs of the existing church community.

Positioned to the rear of the original granite hall, the new structure is discreet from the entrance but appears to float above a landscaped garden when viewed from the road below. Frameless floor-to-ceiling glazing and horizontal timber boarding provide a striking counterpoint to the pink granite, while emphasising the strong horizontality of the design. A slender asymmetrical flat roof and minimal steel platform define the roof and floor slabs as thin grey bands.
Soft landscaping integrates the building into its sloping site, with a timber-sleeper path and carefully selected shrubs and trees enhancing the setting.
